Jeremiah
Green is the oldest of three brothers. Raised by poor tenant
farmers on a rundown farm in Georgia, his father was jailed for stealing
money from the collection plate at a local church. To make ends his
mother took in laundry and told fortunes at a seedy hotel. Jeremiah was a
troubled child. As he grew, he became friends with a local clergyman. After
a few years, Jeremiah himself began preaching on the revival circuit. Rumor
has it that Green was not only a protege of the older clergyman, but also
his
partner in crime, spreading their own version of “stealing from the
rich, and
giving to the poor.” For a time, Green and his younger brother, Jonathan
operated a traveling “tent revival” and encouraged his audiences
to donate
money to help others less fortunate (like them). Over
the past decade, the
Green Brothers have been questioned by police on numerous occasions.
Allegations include everything from racketeering to bribery and fraud-not
to mention smuggling and money laundering. Although authorities have
never been able to prove anything, they suspect the Greens may be a
team of international swindlers of sizable proportions.
